Artist Shelby Dillon Explores Life in Color

While sitting at a rooftop venue in Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana neighborhood, Shelby Dillon was mesmerized by the bright towels and umbrellas spread for miles on the beaches below. Her artistic instinct kicked in and she translated this bird’s-eye view into abstract and colorful paintings of umbrellas.

“I’ve always found inspiration in the world around me,” says Shelby, who is mostly self-taught. Having grown up in Hilton Head, South Carolina, her subjects tend to reflect her native surroundings, complete with palm trees and Lowcountry marshes—settings many Southern women are drawn to.
