Fresh Look: Repurposed Screen Door

Creative solutions and easy embellishments open the door to organization in the entryway.

The  constant slamming of a screen door, once provided the soundtrack to a small-town summer. Brought inside, this timeworn staple can welcome guests once again—this time in a new way: a message board and entryway organizer. To start, remove the door’s screen window, and replace it with a piece of wood that has been cut to size and finished in chalkboard paint. Put the board in place with nails or brads, and if desired, cover old nicks and nail holes with decorative accents.

Next, use a wall-mount soap dish as a landing place for chalk that’s used daily to scribble doodles, schedules, quotes, or shopping lists. For a little pizzazz, replace the old door knob with a new decorative version.

Finally, take a trip to the hardware store where you will find many options for project add-ons. Hang a few baskets from S hooks to catch the day’s miscellany and help this old-fashioned fitting keep incoming clutter under control.
